History

A club with more than
100 years of history

The history of the Tarragona Tennis Club is enough to write a few books. From starting our journey with two tennis courts to being a benchmark in our territory with nearly 30 tennis and paddle tennis courts.

Great milestones thanks to the efforts of all the members of the Club who have been part of this great family.

The Club's milestones

(1915-1923)
Foundation of the club

In 1915 Mr. Lluis Bonet i Amigó, the main organizer and soul of the section, founded the Lawn Tennis Club Tarragona. In the same year, two courts were inaugurated on Estanislau Figueres Street in Tarragona.

(1923-1955)
Growth and Gilded Age

The section, initially made up of 40 members, was integrated into the Gymnastic Club, so in 1925 the facilities were moved to Avenida Catalunya (former Camí de l’Àngel) with 3 courts, a social chalet and a small garden.

Between 1918 and 1929, the Lluís Bonet Trophy was played at the club and in 1924 the first social championship was organised to establish an internal ranking.

After a few years, in 1939, the section was changed to “Gymnastic Club Tennis Section”.

At this stage, the club began a period of boom that began in 1947 until 1955, the year of the crisis in the football section of Club Gimnàstic (the club’s base).

(1955-1964)
Club Tennis Tarragona

Due to the crisis of the Gymnastic Club, in 1955 it was agreed to constitute the section as an independent company, in addition to acquiring a villa, land, courts and facilities. Since then we have been Club Tennis Tarragona.

In 1960, in order to regulate the operation of the Club as an independent entity, the board submitted a draft of the social statute to the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation.

The increase in the number of members grew after the incorporation as an independent company, with more than 200 at the end of 1955. Also, thanks to the creation of the statutes, the categories of youth and children’s members are instituted. This causes an increase in sports activities and, consequently, in members.

(1964-1985)
The Club in Cala Romana

In the 60s, the number of members experienced a strong increase and the club organized official social championships and interclub championships.

The members were very active, and at this stage, the Seven O’clock supporters’ club was born, which was created by those members who played before starting to work. Later, this peña organizes championships for beginners, with dancing, dinner and awards ceremony.

In 1964, the new facilities were inaugurated in Cala Romana and we went from 300 members to 2,000 after the move. This was due to the reduction of monthly fees and minimum entry fees for the youngest in order not to lose great promises due to lack of means. With this philosophy, the tennis school was created in 1966.

With the increase in membership, it was decided to expand the club’s facilities. In 1970, and with the help of the National Delegation and the economic effort of the club, 4 clay courts were built.

Two years later, the construction of a “tennis” court began and the facilities were improved at different points.

In 1974, the board presented an ambitious project of extensions, of which finally only part of the dressing room would be expanded and a cafeteria would be built.

(1985-2010)
New achievements for the club and the start of padel

In 1985 the first Diada of the club was celebrated to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the foundation.

A few years later, in 1991, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation granted the club the organization of the Spanish women’s absolute championship.

In 1996, the David Cup was held between Spain and Denmark to try to return to the world group. This becomes the most important international event in the history of the Tarragona Tennis Club.

Between 2000 and 2003 the facilities were expanded. The first two paddle tennis courts are built and an improvement of the facilities is approved.

At this stage there is a turning point at the sporting level. The club’s first men’s senior team moves up to the first national category. In addition, the Tennis School is among the best in Catalonia in many categories.

During these years, the club organizes a great diversity of competitions at national and international level, such as a Federation Cup qualifier, the European Men’s Team Championship “Copa del Sol”, the World Veterans +60 Team Championship, the Spanish Women’s Absolute Championship, or the Spanish Veterans +35 and +40 Championship. among oth

And in 2006, the international ATP Open Challenger “Costa Daurada” was recovered.

(2010-2018)
Enlargements and the Mediterranean Games

During this last stage , a multipurpose sports court was built to practice different sports, the paddle tennis courts were expanded and the tennis courts closest to the beach were restructured. In 2018, the purchase of the Tennis Park sports club was approved.

Also that same year, our Club hosts tennis during the two days of the Mediterranean Games in our city.
